Have you ever wanted to learn a new language? Do you not have much time to devote to this cause, but would like to do a little here and there?
Memrise might be for you.
I have been using the website for a couple of months now and I’ve got to say its pretty great. Pick your course (beginner French in my case) and slowly grow your garden of knowledge.
Memrise uses a great garden metaphor for your learning. First you must plant a seed, presented with “mems” which help you to vividly memorise the translation. Slowly grow the seed to a fully grown plant and then harvest it to store it in your long term memory.
Memrise frequently reminds you to water these long term memories to keep them strong.
Doing 10 -15 minutes a day is a great way to learn. I have learnt 142 words so far and this is just the beginner course so there seems to be plenty to learn.
Memrise also includes some great quotes on the loading screens which encourage you to keep going.
The website is also really well built and nicely presented, so props to the team behind the design and development.
Of course I am looking at it from an English speakers perspective. I don’t know how Memrise fairs for non-English speakers, but its certainly worth checking out, and with the ability to add your own mems, Memrise thrives on user generated content.
Let me know what you think and what language you are hoping to learn!
Thanks for reading,
