The struggle for the Iron Throne continues

Game of thrones season 3

With just two weeks left until the return of the epic adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire” series of novels, HBO have released a second trailer for the eagerly anticipated third season of Game of Thrones.

The third season is expected to be loosely based on the first half of A Storm of Swords, the third novel of the “Song of Ice and Fire” series of fantasy bestsellers. Often named as the favorite in the series by many, the book delivers several dramatic twists and confrontations in the war over the Iron Throne.

The trailer features the return of the main protagonists from the previous seasons such as Jon Snow, Daenerys Targaryen (and her dragons!) and Tyrion Lannister as seven noble families fight for control of the mythical land of Westeros. Political intrigue is a pervasive theme throughout the series, as the books are said to draw inspiration from historical events such as the Wars of the Roses.

The series also saw the red carpet treatment as a Hollywood premiere was held for the show. Richard Madden , who plays Rob Stark, told of how he is excited for season three stating that “season one and two are a warm up for this, I think. When I got the script I was like ‘Wow, it’s payoff after payoff after payoff’.”

HBO give the description of the series as follows:

“Summers span decades. Winters can last a lifetime. And the struggle for the Iron Throne has begun.

It will stretch from the south, where heat breeds plots, lusts and intrigues; to the vast and savage eastern lands; all the way to the frozen north, where an 800-foot wall of ice protects the kingdom from the dark forces that lie beyond. Kings and queens, knights and renegades, liars, lords and honest men…all will play the ‘Game of Thrones’.”

As well as receiving critical acclaim, the show has achieved what many adaptations fail to do in that it seems to have earned the good graces of fans of the novels. It has also garnered a sizable fan base that have not read the novels, but love the story nonetheless.
