What’s with all the incest?

Is anyone else slightly disturbed that over the last year the number of cases of fathers raping and fathering children with their own daughters is now at four?

First there was Josef Fritzl, who imprisoned his daughter for 24 years and had seven children with her.

Then there was a man in Sheffield, even more disturbing because it’s where I live, who raped his two daughters fathering nine children.

Then in quick succession we hear about the “Italian Fritzl” and the “Columbian Fritzl” who both raped their daughters, the former encouraging his son to take part and the later claiming that they had agreed to a romantic relationship; not a winning defence right there. Someone should have told him that consent doesn’t apply to 9 year old daughters, even in Columbia.

What is even more disgusting is the fact that the Sheffield man could be out in less than 20 years. Surely this man should never see the light of day or maybe we should go with what my mum thinks is a suitable punishment for rapists; cut their balls off lol.

Seriously though, I can’t help but wonder how many more there are out there.

I also find it strange that people used to think incest was ok, in some societies, such as that of Ancient Egypt, brother–sister, father–daughter, and mother–son relations were practiced among royalty. It is generally accepted that incestuous marriages were widespread at least during the Greco-Roman period of Egyptian history (Wikipedia).

I think we can all agree that this is something that should remain in the past and am disturbed about what would seem a current resurgence.

Hopefully, Fritzl and his counterparts in these other countries can be consigned to the past as monsters of history. The cynic in me says, however, Fritzl certainly won’t be the last and there could be more out there right now that we just don’t know about. For once I hope I’m wrong.
